How to Become an FBI Agent in Maine

Basic Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • U.S. Driver’s License
  • Between 23 and 36 years old
  • Able to meet the minimum physical fitness standards
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree accredited by the U.S.
  • Minimum of three years or more full-time work experience
  • Able to meet minimum vision and hearing requirements
  • Willing to accept assignments anywhere at the FBI’s discretion
  • Possess the minimum skills and character qualities as defined by the Bureau

Additional Requirements

  • Candidates must submit to a 10 year background check and have a history that meets the minimum standard of conduct and character
  • Candidates cannot have felony convictions
  • Candidates must abide by the Bureau’s drug policy, which means they cannot have used illegal drugs, not including marijuana, in the past 10 years and they cannot have used marijuana, whether legally or illegally, in the past three years

  • B.S. Accounting/Finance — Criminals often leave a paper trail in their accounts, allowing the FBI to investigate their activities and increasing their demand for CPAs
  • B.S. Computer Science — An increasing amount of evidence is found and intercepted online, meaning the FBI has need of those familiar with cybersecurity, networking and software engineering
  • B.S. Engineering — The need for effective communications monitoring and interception requires those with electrical engineering backgrounds or similar expertise
  • B.S. Criminal Justice — A criminal justice degree can prepare agents by giving them a background in investigations, the justice process, criminal psychology and more.

The FBI conducts operations in Maine under the guidance and supervision of its Boston divisional office. Maine has several “resident agencies” for agents on assignment. One is in Portland, Maine’s largest city with 66,318 residents. The other two are in Augusta, Maine’s capital, and Bangor,  it’s third most-populous city.

Interesting Facts About the FBI in Maine

Before the FBI was formed by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte, he assigned a special unit of federal detectives in 1908 to investigate crimes in the Boston area. A field office was soon created for the FBI soon after its inception. One of the earliest high-profile arrests the Boston office made was of gangster Alfred Brady in 1937. While hiding out in Bangor, Maine, Brady and his gang were set upon by federal agents and brought into custody.

Salary Range for an FBI Agent in Maine

New FBI agents are hired at the GS-10 Step 1 level, which corresponds to $47,158 per year. Including the availability pay given to investigator agents working more than 50 hours a week and the standard 14.35% locality pay, an FBI agent in Maine would make $65,715 a year. Agents living closer to the metro Boston area would be eligible for the area’s higher 25.19% locality pay, equalling $70,827 a year.
